The St. Louis Cardinals had three players nominated as finalists for the Rawlings Gold Glove this year: Masyn Winn at shortstop, Nolan Arenado at third base, and Brendan Donovan for utility.
Brendan Donovan spent substantial time this year in both corner outfield positions, as well as second and third base. Overall, he was a neutral defender in terms of defensive runs saved, and he had a plus-six rating for outs over average. He lost to Jared Triolo of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Triolo played the most positions, yet his defensive numbers were worse than Donovan’s. Kike Hernandez of the Los Angeles Dodgers had superior numbers than both, but his positional versatility was inferior to Donovan’s.
Masyn Winn, the Cardinals’ rookie shortstop, fell just short of earning the National League Gold Glove at shortstop. Winn would have been the second rookie shortstop to win this award, following the first, Jeremy Pena of the Houston Astros in 2022. Winn did, however, get the Fielding Bible Award this year for being the greatest defensive shortstop in all of baseball.
