Report outlines the Saints’ surprise strategy after sacking head coach.
The New Orleans Saints have made some significant changes in the last week, but that doesn’t mean they consider themselves to be in the early stages of a rebuild.
Dennis Allen was fired as the Saints’ head coach following their Week 9 loss to the Carolina Panthers. New Orleans then moved one of their greatest players, Pro Bowl cornerback Marshon Lattimore, to an NFC contender.
The Saints also have significant salary cap difficulties, as they are expected to be over $60 million above the limit in 2025. Despite this, Ian Rapoport claimed on Sunday that the Saints, as an organization, do not believe in blowing their team apart.
They’d rather try to renegotiate the contracts of important veterans like Derek Carr, Cameron Jordan, and Tyrann Mathieu than trade them for draft selections.
After Allen was sacked, New Orleans general manager Mickey Loomis lamented the team’s “avalanche of injuries”. Carr missed many games due to an oblique injury, and standout wide receiver Chris Olave has already had several concussions. Some of this contributed to the Saints’ collapse after their offense appeared to be on fire following a 2-0 start.
If the Saints want to avoid rebuilding, they’ll need to be very inventive this summer. They are motivated to do so, despite the fact that they do not look to be in serious competition.
