In a move that has sent shockwaves throughout the college basketball world, the University of Louisville has announced the return of Russ Smith, one of the program’s most beloved and successful players. Smith, who played for the Cardinals from 2010 to 2014, will be rejoining the team as a graduate assistant coach.
The news was announced at a press conference held at the KFC Yum! Center, where Smith was joined by Louisville Head Coach, Kenny Payne, and Athletic Director, Josh Heird.
“I’m thrilled to welcome Russ back to the Louisville family,” said Coach Payne. “He’s a true Cardinal legend, and his passion, energy, and knowledge of the game will be invaluable assets to our program.”
Smith, who was a key member of Louisville’s 2013 National Championship team, had a storied career with the Cardinals. He averaged 11.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game, while shooting 37.4% from three-point range. Smith’s clutch performances and fearless attitude on the court earned him the nickname “Russdiculous.”
After leaving Louisville, Smith went on to play professionally overseas, competing in leagues in China, Turkey, and Israel. However, he always maintained a strong connection to the university and the city of Louisville.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to Louisville and give back to the program that gave me so much,” Smith said. “I’m excited to work with Coach Payne and the rest of the staff to help develop the next generation of Cardinal players.”
As a graduate assistant coach, Smith will be responsible for assisting with practice planning, game preparation, and player development. He’ll also be involved in recruiting and community outreach efforts.
“Russ is a true ambassador for our program, and his presence will be felt throughout the university and the city,” said Athletic Director Heird. “We’re thrilled to have him back on board and look forward to seeing the impact he’ll make on our team and our community.”
Smith’s return to Louisville is a major coup for the program, which has been working to rebuild and reestablish itself as a national powerhouse. With Smith’s expertise, passion, and dedication, the Cardinals are poised to make a significant impact in the ACC and beyond.
“Russ is a winner, and he knows what it takes to succeed at the highest level,” said Coach Payne. “He’ll be an invaluable resource for our players, and his presence will help us to build a winning culture here at Louisville.”
As Smith embarks on this new chapter in his career, he’s eager to make a positive impact on the Louisville program and the community.
“I’m excited to get started and make a difference,” Smith said. “I’m proud to be a Cardinal, and I’m looking forward to helping our team achieve greatness.”
