Kevin Durant Wins 2024-25 Magic Johnson Award for Excellence On and Off the Court
Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant has added another prestigious accolade to his illustrious career, as he has been named the 2024-25 recipient of the Magic Johnson Award. The award, presented annually by the Professional Basketball Writers Association (PBWA), recognizes an NBA player who best combines excellence on the court with outstanding cooperation and dignity in dealing with the media and the public.
This marks a significant moment for Durant, a two-time NBA champion, 2014 MVP, and Olympic gold medalist, who has spent nearly two decades crafting a Hall of Fame-worthy legacy. However, the Magic Johnson Award focuses on a different facet of Durant’s influence—his professionalism, humility, and leadership both in and outside the basketball arena.
A Season of Leadership and Resilience
Durant’s 2024-25 NBA season has been nothing short of remarkable. Despite the Suns facing numerous injuries and internal changes, Durant remained a pillar of consistency. Averaging 27.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game, he not only delivered elite performance night in and night out but also served as a mentor to the younger players on the roster.
Head coach Mike Budenholzer praised Durant’s leadership, stating, “KD showed us what it means to lead by example. Whether we were winning or struggling, he carried himself with class and focus. He made our locker room a better place and our team stronger mentally.”
Media Appreciation and Public Engagement
Durant has long had a complex relationship with the media, but this season marked a turning point. He engaged more openly with reporters, offering thoughtful responses, giving credit to teammates, and addressing both wins and losses with maturity and insight.
Reporters covering the Suns commended Durant’s growth. “This year, Kevin was incredibly accessible and transparent. He never ducked the tough questions and always treated us with respect,” said Lisa Gutierrez of the Arizona Republic. “That’s exactly what the Magic Johnson Award stands for.”
Beyond his media presence, Durant also stepped up his community involvement. Through his Kevin Durant Charity Foundation (KDCF), he expanded educational initiatives across Phoenix, funded youth basketball programs, and led disaster relief efforts in response to wildfires in Arizona.
Honoring a Legacy
Named after NBA legend and Lakers icon Earvin “Magic” Johnson, the award honors those who not only elevate their game but also uplift those around them. Magic Johnson himself congratulated Durant via social media, writing, “Congrats to @KDTrey5 for winning the award in my name. You’ve shown the world what being a true professional looks like. Much respect!”
Durant responded during a postgame interview, visibly humbled: “To receive an award with Magic Johnson’s name on it is a huge honor. Magic wasn’t just a great player—he represented the league with class, and to be seen in that light means everything.”
Cementing a Legacy
At 36 years old, Durant’s basketball legacy is already secure, but accolades like this continue to redefine his narrative. Once known more for his scoring prowess and public feuds with media critics, Durant’s evolution into a respected elder statesman of the game adds new layers to his career story.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also acknowledged the significance of the moment: “Kevin Durant is not only one of the greatest players of his generation, but also a role model for how athletes can positively engage with their communities and with the media. This award reflects his total impact on the sport.”
As the 2024-25 season winds down and the Suns prepare for a potential playoff push, Durant’s Magic Johnson Award reminds fans and peers alike that greatness isn’t measured by stats alone—but also by character, grace, and the ability to inspire.
