Egypt’s Sam Morsy confirmed Ipswich Town captain
Morsy, a deadline day signing from Championship’s side Middlesbrough, is no stranger to Cook, having played for the coach twice for Chesterfield and Wigan Athletic and captaining both sides under his charge.
Overall, Morsy made 218 appearances for Cook across League Two, League One, and the Championship, helping the coach win two league titles with Wigan and Chesterfield and reach the EFL Trophy final with the latter back in 2014.
Since he joined Ipswich, Morsy has featured in six games and has been leading the team on the pitch after taking the captain’s armband in the recent games after the departure of former captain Luke Chambers for Colchester United.
Asked if Morsy will become the permanent captain for the tractor Boys, Cook confirmed the news, while revealing it was always going to be the Egyptian.
“Sam is club captain, it was always going to be. He’s someone who has played for me before,” Cook said.
“For Sam and Lee and all of our players it’s the time to shine now. There’s no fear from us, we have nothing to fear at this club. We have 20,000 home fans every week and we have a (brilliant) traveling support.
“It’s time for our lads to be what they are going to be and step up to the plate.”
Morsy will now be looking to return back to the Egyptian national team, having been called-up for the preliminary squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Libya, before being dropped from the final list.
