Boom! BYU Cougars Emerging as Standouts to Land Former Four-Star recruit from Transfer Portal After Bungled Quarterback Situation
Isaac Wilson is not going to return to Utah for his sophomore season and will instead enter the transfer portal. This latest development with the youngest brother of Denver Broncos quarterback Zach Wilson creates an interesting scenario for a family with deep-rooted ties to the Beehive State’s Holy War.
Will he decide to continue his career at BYU? We shall see.
Wilson, a former four-star recruit, committed to play for the Utes over an offer from the Cougars. Oregon, Miami, Louisville and Arizona State were also in the mix. Now, less than one full year after signing with his mother and father’s alma mater, he will reopen his recruitment when the transfer portal officially opens its winter window on Monday.
Mike Wilson, the patriarch, played college football at Utah. Lisa met her husband during her time as a student in Salt Lake City.
The entire family grew up as fans of the state’s flagship university. However, their allegiance flipped when head coach Kyle Whittingham refused to offer Zach a scholarship— so the oldest three Wilson brothers played for BYU. Isaac ultimately went against the mold and snubbed the Cougars in favor of the Utes.
He was never supposed to play this season. Cam Rising was going to be the starter. Wilson was going to develop as his backup. Except that is not what happened.
Isaac Wilson’s freshman year was a rollercoaster.
Rising missed most of the year with an injury. Wilson was in and out of the lineup. He initially started in relief of Rising. He was later benched. Additional injuries to the third- and fourth-string quarterbacks eventually forced Wilson to get back on the field and play through an illness against Colorado.
And then he was benched, again, for the rest of the season. Utah’s offensive coordinator also resigned at the end of October.
All of the turmoil ultimately proved to be detrimental for Isaac Wilson during his freshman year so he is going to seek a new opportunity elsewhere. He threw for 1,510 yards and 10 touchdowns this season and will be a great addition to a team in need of a plug-and-play quarterback or depth at the position.
BYU set to pursue a quarterback in the transfer portal. Jake Retzlaff may or may not return to the program in 2025. McCae Hillstead and Treyson Bourguet are already in the system.
