Edmonton Oilers acquire forwards Adam Henrique and Sam Carrick from Ducks in three-way trade
The Edmonton Oilers have made their first moves ahead of Friday’s NHL trade deadline, acquiring forwards Adam Henrique and Sam Carrick from the Anaheim Ducks in a three-way trade.
This is according to Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli, who was the first to report that both players would be heading to Edmonton.
The deal will see the Oilers send their first-round pick in 2024 and a conditional 5th-round pick in 2025 to the Ducks, with Anaheim retaining 50 percent of Henrique’s $5.825-million cap hit while acquiring the two players and a seventh-round pick. The Tampa Bay Lightning are also involved in the deal, retaining 25 percent of Henrique’s salary, wherein the Oilers are trading a fourth-round pick to them for the salary retention.
Henrique, 34, is having a great season for the middling Ducks, scoring 18 goals and 42 points in 60 games this season, winning 52.9 percent of his faceoffs. A veteran of 14 seasons, Henrique has found lots of offence in recent years, too, averaging a 55-point per 82-game pace over each of the last three seasons. This, mind you, comes with the Ducks being one of the worst teams in recent years
At 5v5 this season, Henrique has scored 0.94 goals per hour and 1.84 points per hour, totals that rank him fourth and eighth on the Oilers, respectively. This season, Henrique has spent 154 minutes on the penalty kill, second most on the Ducks to only Carrick, who the Oilers are also acquiring in this deal.
According to hockeyviz.com, Henrique has provided even-strength offence at a one percent rate above league average and defence at a two percent rate above league average. On the penalty kill, Henrique has contributed at a league-average rate. Overall, HockeyViz pegs his contributions as that of a second-line forward.
Henrique, a pending unrestricted free agent, carried a $5.825-million cap hit with him this season. If the Ducks retain 50 percent of Henrique’s salary, and a third team retains an additional 25 percent, the Oilers would acquire him with a cap hit of $1.45 million.
Carrick, 31, is a right-shot center who has chipped in eight goals and 11 points in 61 games this year, winning 51 percent of his draws this season. Standing at 6’0, 200 lbs., he brings the ability to kill penalties and physicality, laying 10.89 hits per hour at 5v5 — a number that would rank second among regular Oilers forwards behind only Evander Kane
His numbers from HockeyViz aren’t very strong. He’s contributed offence at a nine percent rate below league average, defence at a three percent rate below league average, and penalty kill at a seven percent rate below league average.
According to HockeyViz, his contributions equate to those of a just below-fourth-line player. He will likely be the Oilers’ 12th or 13th forward, and he doesn’t need to be an everyday player for them.
Also a pending unrestricted free agent, Carrick carries an $850,000 cap hit.
