Today it was announced that former Belmont sharpshooter Cade Tyson has committed to the Tar Heels. This announcement arrived via his Instagram page.

Tyson is the first transfer portal prospect to commit to UNC this offseason, giving Hubert Davis a welcomed addition to his roster.

Tyson is a 6’7 forward from Monroe, NC. He spent his first two seasons playing for the Bruins where he averaged 15 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. He was a very efficient scorer whenever he set foot on the floor as well — so far he averages 49.2% from the field and 44.6% from three-point range. During the 2023-24 season, Tyson knocked down 46.5% of his tries from deep, which was the second-highest percentage in the NCAA behind Dayton’s Koby Brea, who is another prospect that Hubert Davis has been in contact with. This commitment could impact UNC’s recruitment of Brea, but Davis still landed a fantastic shooter in Tyson.

Now that UNC has finally landed a player in the transfer portal, the big question is who is next for this roster. The obvious need is a center, which has been a challenge to address so far. A few other names that are out there at the moment are Kentucky transfer Ado Theiro and Rutgers transfer Cliff Omoruyi. There is still a lot of work to be done by Hubert Davis and his staff, and this is all without factoring in whether or not RJ Davis will return for the 2024-25 season. We still do not have any information one way or another, but hopefully there will be an announcement from him soon.
