Swindon Town Poised To Secure Signing Of Talented 23-Year-Old

Swindon Town are close to confirming their most recent summer signing with the arrival of former Chelsea midfielder Tariq Uwakwe, according to Ryan Whelan on Twitter.

The 23-year-old, who spent last season at fellow League Two side Crewe Alexandra, is set to put pen to paper with Michael Flynn’s side, with the necessary paperwork recently being submitted to the club.

With the paperwork now being handed in, it had to be registered before midday for Uwakwe to make the Swindon matchday squad ahead of their first game of the season away at Colchester United, with a potential announcement on his arrival expected at any time on their social media channels.

The former Chelsea youngster had been without a club following his departure from Crewe Alexandra earlier in the summer, in which he decided to move on despite being offered a fresh terms to remain with The Railwaymen.

Uwakwe is bound to be Swindon’s sixth new addition of the summer following the permanent arrivals of Udoka Godwin-Malife and Liam Kinsella from Forest Green Rovers and Walsall respectively.

The Robins have also added three loanees to their squad throughout the summer, with goalkeeper Murphy Mahoney joining for the season from Championship outfit QPR. As well as that, they have also added winger Dan Kemp, who arrives from MK Dons, alongside striker Jake Young, who makes the temporary switch to The County Ground from Bradford City.

The midfielder had been on the books of Chelsea since he was eight years old, appearing for their U18s, U19s and U21s, before experiencing his first taste of EFL football by signing on loan for Accrington Stanley for the 2020/21 season, in which he scored four goals in 21 appearances for the club.

Uwakwe then made the permanent switch to Crewe Alexandra in January 2022, in which he would make 48 appearances for The Railwaymen, scoring once and assisting five times before departing the club at the end of the 22/23 campaign.

Writer’s View

Tariq Uwakwe is a player who possesses real ability and going into the new season, it’s something that I feel Swindon needed to add more of, despite completing the signing of Dan Kemp for the season from MK Dons.

At 23 years old, he now has a fair bit of experience playing football in League One and League Two and by joining The Robins under the leadership of Michael Flynn, he could be the one to get the best out of him as I feel he’s still relatively raw in some aspects.

Overall, I think it’s a smart acquisition for Swindon Town as the club approaches kick-off ahead of the new campaign.
