Jeff Stelling reacts to what Leeds United did in ‘desperate’ situation v Newcastle live on Sky Sports

Jeff Stelling has reacted to the “desperate” situation of Leeds United after conceding two penalties and missing one of their own in the 2-2 draw against Newcastle last weekend (13 May).

Sam Allardyce picked up his first point as Leeds manager in the controversy-packed draw against the Magpies, in which Patrick Bamford had an opportunity to give his side a 2-0 lead from the penalty spot saved by Nick Pope, before Callum Wilson netted a brace of penalties shortly afterwards.

The four-goal draw left Leeds United 18th in the Premier League and one point behind Everton with just two games of the Premier League season remaining.

“They may need six points, they may not need as much as that,” Stelling said live on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday. [20 May, 13:39pm]

“Sam Allardyce reckons Leeds would be 60-65% safe if they’d beaten Newcastle. You can’t give away two penalties and miss one of your own when you’re in a desperate situation.”

Although Leeds United actually played reasonably well in the four-goal draw against the Magpies, a number of comical errors proved their undoing.

Leeds should have been out of site in the first half an hour, but Bamford’s missed penalty seemed to ignite a batch of nerves within the team, which in turn, resulted in moments of madness from both Max Wober and Junior Firpo.

There has always been an element of madness associated with Leeds United ever since Marcelo Bielsa arrived at the club a few years ago, but the club have previously harnessed this to their advantage.

However, this term, it has proven their downfall.

Moments such as Bamford’s missed penalty and the second-half capitulation against Crystal Palace simply cannot happen if you wish to be a successful Premier League side.

Fans hoped that the arrival of renowned pragmatist Allardyce would resolve these issues, and hopefully, the team have learnt their lessons heading into the last two games of the season.

In other Leeds United news, an exit-bound senior player was spotted in tears after what happened recently.
