Veteran centre-forward Lee Gregory hit double figures last season and teed up Josh Windass for the winning goal over Barnsley in the League One play-off final.

Sheffield Wednesday striker Lee Gregory says he is itching to get a fresh deal after helping the Owls seal promotion.

The forward played a huge role in Darren Moore’s side overcoming Barnsley in the League One play-off final. He teed up Josh Windass for the only goal of the game as Wednesday sealed a first promotion in over a decade.

Gregory, who turns 35 in August, is one of a clutch of players who are shortly coming to the end of their current contracts.

But, speaking to Yorkshire Live, he is adamant he wants to stay put at Hillsborough and commit to a third year. Wednesday boss Moore has said conversations over contract talks will likely begin this week.

“Another year by the way please!” Gregory said, when asked on his situation by Yorkshire Live.

“I would love to stay. I love it here. Unfortunately, it’s not up to me. If it was then I’d have been signed ages ago. Hopefully I can get something sorted so we’ll see.”

Gregory also spoke of the atmosphere inside Wembley and how the team deserved their promotion.

“That second leg against Peterborough was something else,” he said. “But the emotion of this game was just different. The fans are amazing and they show that each week.

“It’s still not sunk in but I think we deserve it. Let’s be honest, we knew we should have gone up automatically but we didn’t – this is the next best thing. We deserve it and I’m going to enjoy it.”
