Chelsea have entered the race to sign ‘amazing’ £35m Newcastle target

Gabri Veiga appears to be destined for a move to the Premier League this summer, but a transfer to Newcastle United is looking less and less likely.

It had been reported in Spain that the Magpies were close to signing Veiga last week, but that was initially denied by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Noises coming out of Spain have been very different to the English media’s interpretation of the situation. They have claimed that a transfer is close, while in the UK it has been suggested that there is no chance of the 21-year-old swapping Celta Vigo for Newcastle United.

The Magpies have reportedly held talks and believe he has a lot of potential, but that appears to be as far as it is going to go. The Telegraph have even claimed that Newcastle sources have told them that Veiga will not be joining Eddie Howe’s side.

But while a move to St James’ Park might not be on the cards, a switch to the Premier League is still a possibility.

Chelsea are now interested in Gabri Veiga

According to the Guardian, Chelsea are now interested in signing Veiga this summer. The report states that Mauricio Pochettino’s side are prepared to ‘push hard’ for him, but may face competition from Liverpool.

Whoever does win the race to sign Veiga will have to activate his release clause, with Celta Vigo only willing to sell if someone offers £35million for his services.

The ‘amazing‘ attacking midfielder could be a replacement for Kai Havertz at Stamford Bridge, with the Germany international currently being linked with a move away from the Blues.

The Chelsea squad could get quite the makeover from Pochettino, and the owners are likely going to back their new manager in the transfer market. That could result in a move for Veiga, who looked like he could be a smart addition for Newcastle.

But Eddie Howe’s side have distanced themselves from the Spaniard. With Chelsea and Liverpool keen, we might soon be able to see whether or not we were right to avoid making a move.
