The EFL have introduced a new law for next season that could have a serious impact on Sheffield Wednesday star Will Vaulks. The midfielder is renowned for his long throws but next season a move has been introduced that will impact him.
It was from a long throw that Liam Palmer eventually scored his equaliser against Peterborough from. The Wales midfielder is lethal on the launchpad and Wednesday will continue to be a threat next season.
The EFL have made a slight amendment to their regulations when it comes to taking a throw. From the 2023/24 campaign, the use of a towel will no longer be permitted.
Vaulks will therefore have to make a slight tweak to his technique. He was spotted drying the ball with a towel prior to his throw that led to Palmer bundling home a memorable equaliser in the play-offs last month.
Darren Moore clearly has his team working on these situations in training. Wednesday have a squad that is blessed with height and it’s an area where the team can be dangerous.
Vaulks is under contract for next season and he will hope to continue in fine form. He was a big player during 2022/23 as he made 54 appearances for the Owls.

The 29-year-old will hope to continue playing a sizeable role in Moore’s team next season. His throw-in capabilities make him a very useful option but now he has some work to do.
The midfielder will still be able to dry the ball but he will have to make do with his shirt. The EFL have also introduced a new multi-ball system from next season that will aim to increase the amount of playing time.
It’s the throw-in tweak that will give Wednesday the most food for thought. Vaulks will have to get busy practising his throws with a somewhat slippier ball than usual.
