Swindon Town Midfielder Set To Sign For League Two Promotion Rivals

Swindon Town midfielder Jonny Williams is set to snub Wrexham, in favour of a move to fellow League Two side Bradford City this summer, according to journalist Phil Cadden.

The Welshman has had a strong campaign for Swindon, but is set to leave upon the expiry of his contract, which alerted interest from several EFL and SPFL sides. However, it appears as though the midfielder has made his decision…

Who is Jonny Williams?

The 29-year-old is a product of the Crystal Palace youth setup, whilst enjoying various loan spells with Ipswich Town, Sunderland and Nottingham Forest. He joined Charlton on a free transfer in 2019, before moving to Cardiff and then Swindon.

Williams joined Swindon Town on a free transfer in August 2021, playing a crucial role in the clubs play-off campaign, before their exit to Port Vale on penalties. Last season, the midfielder made 39 appearances in all competitions, scoring ten goals and assisting a further two.

Both Wrexham and Bradford City have been battling it out for his signature, but they have faced competition from Scottish Premiership side Hibernian. Wrexham gained promotion last season, after winning the National League title, but it appears as though the Welsh side have simply missed out.

Meanwhile, Bradford City are managed by Welshman Mark Hughes and reached the play-off places in League Two last season. However, despite winning the opening leg, they suffered a loss against eventual winners Carlisle United and will remain in the fourth tier.

What’s been said?

According to an article from journalist Phil Cadden, Williams has made his decisive decision on his next club. He stated…

‘’Jonny Williams is joining Bradford City on a three-year deal’

He goes on to mention some of the other sides that made moves for the player, stating…

Williams is believed to have turned down offers from League One side Northampton as well as League Two trio Wrexham, Notts County and Gillingham.’

This is a major blow for Swindon Town, who have lost one of their key men to a direct League Two rival. Similarly, Notts County and Gillingham have lost out, whilst the Welsh giants of Wrexham have also been turned down.

However, from a Bradford perspective, this is a truly excellent addition for Mark Hughes’ side. The Welshman knows the player well and is likely to be able to fit Williams into the setup easily and effectively.
