Vincent Kompany and Burnley eye loan move for treble-winning Manchester City defender

Newly promoted Burnley are weighing up a loan move for Manchester City defender Sergio Gomez.

The 22 year-old, who was one of six summer signings at Manchester City last summer, made just 10 starts for the Sky Blues during his first campaign at the Etihad Stadium.

Gomez completed an £11 million move from RSC Anderlecht in August, where the Spain U21 international played under former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany, having joined from Borussia Dortmund.

The left-back made 23 appearances in all competitions, making his Premier League debut during a 4-2 win over Crystal Palace.

Gomez, who also featured during the 6-3 demolition of Manchester United in October at the Etihad Stadium, was dramatically sent-off during a goalless draw with FC Copenhagen in the UEFA Champions League following a VAR review.

The Spaniard also started the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley Stadium against Sheffield United, and concluded his debut campaign in England with three pieces of silverware; including a Champions League winners medal.

The boyhood Blue, who idolised David Silva and inherited the legendary midfielder’s shirt number upon signing for Manchester City, could be reunited with Vincent Kompany this summer, as the Burnley boss is reportedly interested in bringing the 22 year-old to Turf Moor.

Burnley have made contact with Manchester City regarding a loan move for the left-back, as Komapny ‘likes’ the Spain U21 international, according to Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri.

City begin their bid to win the Premier League for a fourth consecutive year against Burnley on Friday 11th August, and should Gomez move to Turf Moor, then the left-back would be ineligible to play against the Sky Blues.

Kompany was without key defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis for Burnley’s visit to the Etihad Stadium in the Emirates FA Cup quarter-finals last season, due to the centre-back being on loan from Manchester City.

A temporary switch from Manchester to Lancashire isn’t however guaranteed, as Tavolieri claims that Gomez currently prefers to remain at the Etihad Stadium, with aspirations to try to impress Pep Guardiola during pre-season.

Manchester City are due to travel to Asia for pre-season, with friendlies scheduled against both Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid, during trips to South Korea and Japan.
