Following a productive loan stint last season, Burnley sought to bring the left-back back to Turf Moor on a permanent basis this summer.

The 21-year-old made 42 appearances across all competitions and scored four goals as a key member of Burnley’s team that easily won the Championship.

On the day of the transfer deadline, the Clarets made an outrageous attempt to entice Maatsen back to Turf Moor, but he chose to stay at Stamford Bridge instead, where he has since been a part of Mauricio Pochettino’s plans.

However, the attack-oriented fullback has only made two starts, both of which came in the Carabao Cup.

Before Burnley’s match against Chelsea, Kompany remarked, “He’s a young player playing for a top club, so there’s no shame in not starting every week.”

It’s something he will have to work for and something that will come to him through time.

“From our perspective, he had a fantastic season with us and was among the players we tried, as you are aware with some of the others, to keep for the season, but his decision to remain at Chelsea was unquestionably his own, and we accept that decision to the fullest.

“We’re simply grateful for the time we spent working with him at Burnley. Although he will receive a warm greeting from all of the supporters, the fact that we are on opposing sides right now takes precedence.

In response to the question of whether a move for Maatsen may be made again in January or the following summer, Kompany said: “I have to be honest, I haven’t thought that far yet and I can’t tell how we will feel.
