Coventry City linked with ‘absolute warrior’ subject of Championship ‘scramble’ amid contract get-out

Coventry City transfer news from CoventryLive as the Sky Blues are linked with interest in 26-year-old centre-half

Coventry City have been linked with interest in an “absolute warrior” of a defender claimed to be wanted by several Championship clubs this summer.

According to Daily Telegraph football reporter Mike McGrath, the Sky Blues, QPR, Bristol City and Preston have “scouted” Wigan centre-back Jack Whatmough following the Latics’ relegation straight back to League One in a campaign that included a three point deduction for non-payment of players’ wages.

The 26-year-old former Portsmouth defender was named Wigan’s player of the season and included in the EFL Team of the Year when he helped the club gain promotion in 2021/22. He signed a new 18 month contract extension earlier this year, with manager Shaun Maloney saying: “He’s been an absolute warrior for us since I’ve come in, a real warrior. He’ll be a very big player for us in both the coming weeks and also the coming years. He’s a quiet leader, someone you can build a team around.

However, Telegraph writer McGrath has claimed on Twitter : “Wigan centre-back Jack Whatmough could spark a scramble in the Championship on a free transfer. He can choose to leave his club after the non-payment of wages last season. QPR, Bristol City, Preston, Coventry and others have scouted him.”
