Jon Dahl Tomasson has confirmed that defender Tayo Edun is set to leave Blackburn Rovers this summer when an acceptable transfer move presents itself.

The 25-year-old has been at Rovers since the summer of 2021 after joining from League One side Lincoln City. In the past two years, he has racked up only 34 appearances for the Ewood Park side.

Last season under Tomasson, Edun played 20 times, but only four of these were starts. The defender’s contract expires next summer, though there is an option to extend it by a further 12 months.

It is understood that Edun had been attracting interest from elsewhere this summer. A loan switch from Cardiff City in January was turned down by Rovers as Tomasson wanted to keep as full a squad as possible.

Edun was not involved in the squad for Saturday’s pre-season friendly draw against Accrington Stanley. Tomasson has confirmed that the defender will be allowed to move on to pastures new this summer.

Speaking to Lancs Live, Tomasson said: “He’s not involved and he’s one of the players who will be going away.

“At the moment he doesn’t have that option, I think we will see a lot of movement in the next weeks in that way.”

It is understand that Edun’s squad number seven has already been reallocated to summer signing Arnor Sigurdsson. And his impending departure could open the door for more opportunites for young left-back Jake Batty, who made his Rovers debut last year in the Carabao Cup first round win over Hartlepool United.

Tomasson said: “Every player has a good opportunity and it’s about doing the right things. I think our fans, you guys, me, we can see where players can function and where players maybe have difficulties, or need to mature.

“Every player has a good opportunity which is nice because as a player you need the opportunities.

“If you never get the opportunities you will never improve. That’s why we’re really happy with the Academy because they’re putting a lot effort in.”
