The Dutchman, who spent last season on loan at Heerenveen, scored 16 goals in 33 Eredivisie appearances with three more in cup competitions. The Black Cats remain keen on bolstering their attacking options this summer, with Ross Stewart and Luis Hemir Semedo the only senior strikers at the club.

Millwall, Stoke City, and Swansea City have all been credited with an interest in Van Hooijdonk but now the report claims there’s also interest from Premier League sides. The Dutchman is said to have been valued in the region of £10million at the beginning of 2023, but Bologna are reportedly looking to sell.

He’s managed just five appearances in all competitions for the Italian club but is yet to open his goal scoring account. The 23-year-old arrived in Italy in 2021, having scored 23 times in 70 appearances at NAC Breda.

Despite arriving on a free transfer at Bologna, the Italian outfit are said to be looking to cash in on the 6ft3 forward on the back of a solid loan in the Netherlands. Van Hooijdonk won the Eredivisie talent of the month in April 2022 and is the son of former professional footballer Pierre van Hooijdonk.

Transfer business has slowed down at Sunderland since the start of the pre-season campaign. Tony Mowbray’s side have welcomed Nectarios Triantis, Jobe Bellingham, Jenson Seelt and Semedo to the club so far this summer.
