Everton push ‘calamitous’ player to join Turkish club this summer

Everton have offered Mason Holgate to Besiktas this summer.

The Toffees are keen to offload the defender and are pushing him to join the Turkish club on a free season-long loan deal, according to Fotomac.

Holgate joined Everton from Barnsley in 2015 but has struggled to establish a regular place in the starting line-up, having made only eight appearances in the Premier League last season.

His performance against Crystal Palace in April in which he was shown a red card was heavily criticised, with Sky Sports pundit, Lee Hendrie, saying: “What a calamity. Holgate’s had a mare against Ayew. Really bad decision and he’s put his team in trouble.”

With the 26-year-old appearing to be surplus to requirements, he could now be on his way to Besiktas if they are interested in bringing him in on loan.

The Toffees are hopeful that they can take advantage of their good relationship with Besiktas following the transfer of Cenk Tosun and Dele Alli’s brief spell in Turkey.

If the Black Eagles agree to sign Holgate this summer then they won’t have to pay the ‘rental fee or the testimonial fee’.

Sheffield United and Southampton are reportedly both interested in signing the versatile defender.

Having only made five starts in the Premier League last season, Mason Holgate’s future at Everton looks extremely bleak.

The defender has fallen down the pecking order under Sean Dyche and looks likely to be surplus to requirements next season, especially if the Toffees manage to bolster their backline.

With Holgate’s contract set to expire in 2025, the decision to send him out on loan seems a questionable one.

This summer could be the last chance for the Merseyside club to make a decent profit from his departure, so they should really take advantage of that and help their own financial situation.
