Plymouth Argyle and Norwich City reported to be in talks over Bali Mumba transfer

The 22-year-old spent last season on loan to the Pilgrims from Norwich and was voted the League One Player-of-the-Year

Norwich City are ready to sanction a permanent transfer for Bali Mumba to Plymouth Argyle, according to the The Pink Un.

Their reporter Connor Southwell has posted a story in which he writes that “the clubs will continue their talks over the coming days.”

David Wagner’s Norwich squad were set to fly out to Austria today for their last pre-season camp ahead of the 2023/24 Championship campaign.

It was not clear whether Mumba, who has featured in all five of City’s warm-up matches so far, would travel with them or not.

Mumba was an 81st minute substitute when Norwich drew 1-1 with Dutch top flight side AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands on Wednesday.

Southwell wrote: “Norwich have been assessing his progress in pre-season and a decision has been made to sanction a return to Plymouth – with work ongoing to conclude a deal in the coming days.

“Work is still to be done on any potential deal, but the clubs are discussing the possibility of Mumba returning to Devon on a permanent basis – with Norwich having been suitably impressed by Kellen Fisher’s performances during pre-season.”

“Fisher joined Norwich from National League Bromley earlier this summer and has impressed David Wagner in both training and friendly fixtures over the last few weeks.

“They also added Jack Stacey to their right-back ranks on a free transfer from Bournemouth earlier this summer, with the 27-year-old impressing in his early pre-season performances.

“Max Aarons also remains at Norwich but is likely to depart the club this summer with Premier League interest rising – notably from West Ham, Fulham and Brentford.”

Mumba made 37 starts and four substitute appearances for Argyle as a wing-back in their League One title triumph last season, and scored six goals.

Southwell added: “Norwich are likely to play with a flat back four this season – meaning Mumba will likely struggle for game time.”

A huge signing

Plymouth Argyle need another option in that left wing-back role and many would have thought a reunion with Mumba would be unlikely, let alone on a permanent basis.

It would mark a second permanent reunion with a popular loan player after Morgan Whittaker moved to Home Park on a permanent basis from Swansea City earlier this month.

At 21, Mumba has the best years of his career ahead of him and has already proven himself as a perfect fit for Steven Schumacher’s side. The hope will be that he can settle back into live in Devon quickly and develop further with the Pilgrims after a strong year with them last time around.
