Former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Liam Shaw has joined Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan from Celtic. The 22-year-old, who left Hillsborough two years ago after rejecting a new contract, lined up against the Owls last term.

The midfielder spent the 2022/23 campaign on loan at Morecambe, making 39 appearances for the Shrimps across all competitions as the club lost their battle against survival. Latics manager Shaun Maloney, a former Celtic player, told the club’s website: “I’m really happy

“Liam can play many different positions – as a defensive and attacking midfielder – and he started off at centre back at Sheffield Wednesday.

“He’s a really good player and now our squad is really starting to take shape. He’s a great character and brings a different profile physically so I’m glad Liam has joined us for the season, and I hope he’s ready to fight for our cause.”

Shaw has found game time hard to come by since moving north of the border. His only Celtic outing came in their Europa League tie against Real Betis in 2021.

Of his move to Wigan, Shaw said: “I’m really happy to be here. I just can’t wait to get started. I’m looking forward to meeting everyone, getting to know the boys, and getting to business.

“It’s a massive Club, and when I spoke to the Manager, I really bought into his vision and I can’t wait to get started!

“It will suit my game. The Manager wants to play football, and be aggressive, which is what I want to do. I feel like it’s a really good fit.”

Shaw, contracted to Celtic until the summer of 2025, has also previously spent time on loan at Motherwell. “The main thing for me is
