Championship new boys Plymouth Argyle are in talks to sign Everton midfielder Lewis Warrington, TEAMtalk understands.

The 20-year-old has featured for the Toffees in pre-season and was a starter in last weekend’s game at Wigan Athletic.

Warrington, who has come through the ranks at Goodison Park, has spent the last 18 months out on loan at Fleetwood Town and Tranmere Rovers respectively.

Indeed, Warrington spent the second half of the 2021/22 season on loan at Tranmere in League Two before enjoying a season-long loan spell at Fleetwood in League One.

The central midfielder impressed at Fleetwood, making 44 appearances in all competitions and chipping in with one goal and two assists.

But with the player unlikely to break into Sean Dyche’s plans at Everton in the coming season, the club are open to letting him go out on a temporary basis once again.

A number of clubs have made enquiries about Warrington this summer, but TEAMtalk can reveal that Championship new boys Plymouth are hoping to win the race for the midfielder’s signature.

Argyle are managed by Steven Schumacher, the former Everton midfielder, and he will be hoping to establish his side back in the second tier after reaching the Championship for the first time since 2010.

That will be followed by a trip to Watford on August 12, a Sky-televised Saturday lunchtime clash against relegated Premier League club Southampton on August 19, and a away game at Birmingham City a week later.

Those fixtures given an indication of the size of the task facing Argyle as they make their return to the Championship for the first time since 2010.
