Sources: Leeds working on Glen Kamara transfer as Rangers man talks with Middlesbrough, Coventry

TEAMtalk understands Leeds United, Coventry and Middlesbrough have held talks with Rangers about a deal for midfielder Glen Kamara with the player soon to make his transfer preference know.

Leeds United face Championship competition to sign Glen Kamara

The 27-year-old midfielder has been an important player for Rangers since moving to Ibrox from Dundee in January 2019, clocking up 193 appearances during his four-and-a-half-year spell in Glasgow.

However, Kamara has fallen out of favour at the Scottish giants, having been told by Gers boss Michael Beale that he can leave the club. His deal is due to expire in June 2025 and Rangers are keen to move him on this summer before his value deteriorates.

As a result, former Arsenal trainee Kamara has set his sights on a move back to England.

Sources have told TEAMtalk that Kamara has options open to him with talks held with all three Championship hopefuls.

Of the trio, however, it is Leeds who are pushing the strongest. Leeds’ technical director Gretar Steinsson is pushing to finalise a deal for Kamara with the Whites desperately short of midfield options.

The sale of Tyler Adams to Bournemouth on Sunday for £23m makes the American their 12th departure since their relegation in May. And it is in midfield where the club are in most need. As well as Adams, Leeds have also lost Marc Roca, Weston McKennie (loan return) and Adam Forshaw from their engine room.

Leeds want Kamara to bolster midfield options

So far this season, they have operated with teenage star Archie Gray and summer signing Ethan Ampadu in central midfield. And while the duo have both performed well, Leeds do lack much in the way of cover. Another teenage star, Darko Gyabi, is currently their only other available option.

As such, the club are currently one injury away from disaster as things stand, enhancing their urgent need to address their midfield shortfall.

TEAMtalk sources have also indicated that a move for Nottingham Forest’s Jonjo Shelvey is also under consideration. However, Kamara remains their first-choice target and with Daniel Farke making it clear his wish to bring the 52-times capped Finland international to Elland Road.
