Gary Hooper plea for Celtic return is no joke to pal who is adamant Brendan Rodgers should consider it
The 36-year-old is without a club since leaving Dubai’s Gulf United earlier this year but is yearning for a chance.
Playful Gary Hooper joked about a Celtic comeback before an old Parkhead pal insisted an unlikely return to Glasgow’s east end should be considered a live option.
The 36-year-old is without a club since leaving Dubai’s Gulf United earlier this year and Kelvin Wilson offered a serious response to the possibility of Hooper securing a final chance in green and white. It comes fresh off the striker’s free-scoring exploits in the Scottish Masters and the big defender insists Hooper could still be a force under Brendan Rodgers.
Wilson – who was left rolling about the Braehead carpet with Record Sport pundit Ryan Stevenson – told the Scottish Sun: “I know you look at Celtic, and the players they can bring in, but I wouldn’t be surprised with Gary. Hoops could be a back-up player there and still score many goals for Celtic.
“I don’t understand why anyone would question it. That’s my opinion. Gary knows the club inside out and the fans absolutely love him. It’s a no-brainer for me. He wouldn’t cost them anything, so yes! For sure he’d take that opportunity, he’d snatch your hand off for it.”
The former Celtic striker remains a hero among the Parkhead faithful with a stunning record of 82 goals in 138 games before he exited the club for Norwich City in 2013. And Hooper admitted: “I played for one of the biggest clubs in the world, biggest fan-base. I loved my three years up here and, hopefully, if Brendan’s watching I could retire at Celtic…on the bench.”

Seven years ago this very day we welcomed top flight newcomers theRangers to Celtic Park for the first ever Scottish Premiership match between the teams. We of course came out on top with a win, but we didn’t just beat them, we annihilated them.
It was the day Moussa Dembele introduced himself to us and Scottish football scoring a hat trick in a sensational display, the perfect hat trick too. Header, right foot and left foot as he sent the noisy new upstarts homewards to think again.
Although Moussa wasn’t expected to start as Leigh Griffiths was seen as the main striker have scored 40 goals the previous season, but injury curtailed the Scotland striker from playing. But we needn’t have worried as Moussa made himself an instant legend during an unforgettable afternoon at Celtic Park as we started to think that this was a rather special Celtic team with Brendan Rodgers in charge.
It was also the beginning of the end for loudmouth Joey Barton as it would prove to be his last game in a the Rangers jersey. Not before he was taught a lesson by Broony. One drop ball was all it took for Broony to show Barton up for what he was.
Scotty Sinclair and Stuart Armstrong grabbed the other goals as we sent theRangers supporters away facing the truthful reality which was that their new side didn’t have what it took to challenge for the league title and the phantom ‘55’ that they all craved, they liquidation deniers that they are.
A great and memorable day even for yours truly who had a few quid on 4-1! Although I didn’t mind when Stuart Armstrong added the fifth in injury time, after all what’s money when you get to sample your first ever Celtic win in the Scottish Premiership over the newcomers who were founded in 2012 and had made their way through the leagues from Brechin to Paradise only to get skelped.
And if they thought losing 5-1 to Celtic that day was a one-off then they were sadly mistaken. Celtic would repeat the same result later in the same season at Ibrox and that was the day when they really couldn’t take it any longer and the grumblings about reducing the size of the Celtic support at their ground began. Lest we forget.
