Bosun Lawal shares Brendan Rodgers hope for next season; surprise Celtic midfield option emerges
Bosun Lawal still seems to be hopeful about a future career at Celtic.
The 20-year-old has played a handful of games for the Hoops since his switch from Watford in the summer of 2021. Lawal joined Fleetwood Town on a season-long loan last month, signing for The Cods shortly before manager Scott Brown was relieved of his duties.
That disappointment may have been tempered by the fact he signed a new contract until 2026 just before making the move. Celtic seem to see a big future for him, although that is likely to depend on what Brendan Rodgers makes of things.
That’s clearly on Lawal‘s mind as he spoke to RTE after the Ireland under-21s beat Turkey on Friday night. The youngster played in the centre of a back three in that one — a position he’s played exclusively for the Celtic first-team. However, it seems like some surprise midfield talk has emerged.
“The old gaffer did have faith in me and hopefully Brendan does as well after this loan,” he said of his future Celtic hopes.
“I think I adapted quickly [to playing in defence]. I enjoy playing there but I’ll play anywhere the coaches want me to play. Centre-back brings out the composure. When I play centre-midfield I feel like I can run at people. Whatever suits the gaffer.
“It’s about showing everyone what you’re made of, showing them your talent. A bit of Virgil van Dijk, a bit of Paul Pogba, a bit of Ibrahima Konate,” in terms of his on-field likenesses.
Lawal was an ever-present in three Fleetwood matches under Brown. However, he did drop out of the squad entirely when interim boss Matt Lawlor came in for the cup win over Tranmere Rovers.
With former Hibernian boss Lee Johnson now in place at Highbury, it will be interesting to see what role Lawal plays. He still has time on his side in terms of his Celtic pursuit. Perhaps that future lies in midfield.
