Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has opened up on contract talks with Reo Hatate as the Parkhead club look to tie down the midfielder to a new deal.

Hatate turned down their first offer with the club remaining confident of agreeing terms with a player who has a deal in Glasgow’s east end until 2026 with the Scottish Premiership champions reopening talks with the midfielder – who made his return from injury off the bench in the win over Dundee. Reports had suggested the Japan cap asked for talks to be placed on hold due to lingering interest in his services during the window but Celtic are back in negotiations.

Following the 3-0 victory over the Dens Park outfit, Rodgers lifted the lid on the behind the scenes conversations between the player and the club – but the boss conceded he would leave the player and club powerbrokers to iron out the deals. Asked if there was any news on a deal and if he was keen to see Hatate remain at Celtic Park, Rodgers told Sky Sports: “Clearly. He’s a very good player,

“It’s something between the club and the player. The club have been looking to tie it down for a little while. So hopefully there’s movement on that. But no update yet.”

Last summer Hatate was touted with joining former boss Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham amid strong interest from fellow Premier League side Brighton. He was also linked with clubs in Saudi Arabia and France. His return to fitness will be a major boost for Rodgers going into the Champions League group stage opener against Feyenoord.
