Peter Grant has told Celtic star Reo Hatate to ‘take a leaf out of Matt O’Riley’s book’ by forgetting about outside noise and performing on the pitch.

The Celtic legend highlighted how, amid Leeds United’s summer interest in Matt O’Riley, the young Danish star ignored the noise and has, instead, been ‘magnificent’ for Brendan Rodgers’ side this season, as he told Go Radio.

There has been a lot of talk about Reo Hatate’s future and whether or not the Japan star will sign a new contract.

Well, it’s good news for the Celtic fans because a report emerged overnight that Reo Hatate is close to agreeing on a new deal with the Treble winners.

If the 25-year-old does put pen-to-paper, then he will join his fellow countrymen – Kyogo Furuhashi and Daizen Maeda – in signing new deals.

On Saturday, after starting in the Champions League, Hatate was handed his first start of the league season as he helped the Bhoys, who were down to ten for large parts of the game, beat Livingston 3-0, including an opening penalty from the player himself.

“I think he (Hatate) is a right good player,” said Grant. “I don’t think he has hit his form yet. I still think he is getting around about that yet and there are a few question marks over what he thinks.

“I always say that about players ‘don’t talk about what you are going to do in the future, just perform’. I think that is so important because when you aren’t playing well, then it’s the first thing that gets thrown at you. ‘Oh, his head is somewhere else and he wants to go somewhere else’.

“Just perform and if you perform, take a leaf out of Matt O’Riley’s book, for instance.

“Everyone has been talking about him and seemingly Leeds put in a bid for him. All this sort of stuff. I think it was a big bid they put in for him. If that was the case, he has shown everybody why they put in a bid for him. His performances have been magnificent.”

Reo Hatate has a big ceiling

It will be interesting to see how Hatate performs under Brendan Rodgers, in comparison to Ange Postecoglou, because he certainly has the quality to take his game up a few levels.

The Celtic midfield does make for exciting viewing. O’Riley is just getting better and better. It could be argued that he has been the best player so far this season.

Whilst Hatate, now that he is starting games, is going to help Rodgers punch through teams and put yet another title in the cabinet.
