According to reports, Celtic midfielder Reo Hatate is close to signing a contract extension with the club.

During his 21-month spell in Scotland, the midfielder has been a standout player. That form has fueled transfer rumors in recent months, with the summer proving difficult for the Japan international.

Hatate’s spell has already been termed as “challenging” by Hoops manager Brendan Rodgers, but he believes things will calm down now that the transfer season has closed.

Celtic are reportedly in contract renewal talks with Hatate, after talks were first postponed during the summer.

Now, Hoops fans have received the information they sought from the Daily Mail’s dependable reporter Stephen McGowan.

McGowan said conversations have been described as “positive” since they began a week ago. Celtic “expects to receive final confirmation of the offer” from Hatate’s representatives in the coming days.

The team has had a hectic summer with contract renewals. Hatate’s teammates Kyogo Furuhashi and Daizen Maeda, as well as Callum McGregor and Liel Abada, have already signed extensions.

The club also confirmed a four-year contract for Anthony Ralston on Tuesday. (Celtic)

Hatate has been simply superb but there's no rush for a quick Reo return

Given his undeniable talent, signing Hatate would be fantastic news for us all. It doesn’t necessarily imply he’ll remain longer – leaving next summer still appears to be the most likely outcome. However, this would provide us with additional protection and allow us to charge a higher premium.

It would also be a huge lift for everyone at the club, especially the player who is still figuring things out this season.
