Former Celtic goalkeeper Packie Bonner has spoken out about the club’s present goalkeeping dilemma, stating that Caoimhin Kelleher, Liverpool’s backup, could be the proper fit to challenge Joe Hart. Bonner was explicit in his assessment during BBC Sportsound as reported by The National, stating: “They do need, I think, a young goalkeeper coming through the system. I don’t see it. They’ve gone with Scott Bain today. They’ve got [Ben] Siegrist there who doesn’t seem to be pushing his way through to even become number two.”

“So that’s kind of a worry,” he continued, “and they let Conor Hazard go down to England.” I believe they should have a number three pushing through in that area. “A young man.”

Bonner also addressed Kelleher, saying, “There was talk about [Caoimhin] Kelleher coming up from Liverpool.” From that perspective, I’m not sure Liverpool will let him go. Because he meets their criteria, and that would have been an excellent scenario to witness. Could he come in and force Joe Hart to fade into the background as a backup goalkeeper? But at the moment I think he’s number one.”

Celtic fans believe it is critical that the club invest.

Invest in a young, potential goalie. Kelleher could be the ideal choice to push Hart while also providing a long-term answer between the sticks. The Englishman’s contract expires at the end of the season; will they split ways amicably or will Joe sign a new contract?
