Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has been reminiscing, remarking on clips of memorable moments in the club’s history, particularly during the Paul McStay era.

McStay is a Bhoys icon and the archetypal Celtic player for fans of a certain vintage. For someone like Rodgers, the midfielder embodied everything the club stood for.

Rodgers praises McStay’s skills while watching clips from the Love Street title win and McStay’s memorable goal against Koln in Europe on the club’s official YouTube page.

However, it appears that the Celtic team Rodgers most identifies with is the 1987/88 Centenary double-winning side, with the Bhoys manager stating that year’s kit to be his favorite of all time.

“The cup final, a special time,” he stated. You can tell how much it meant to Billy McNeill. This was my favorite Celtic strip of all time, and I always come back to it. I liked the badge and the crest, which had a diamondy look. It was an incredible, incredible final.

“There are memories of growing up, being taken into the pubs to watch these games and the tension in these pubs because it was the only way we could see it – to get that sense of celebration and joy and Celtic winning.”

Rodgers also emphasizes the significance of the 1995 Scottish Cup Final victory over Airdrie, which culminated in McStay and the late, great Tommy Burns raising a trophy after a six-year drought.

That 1995 championship game is one of my favorites. It’s the first trophy I recall Celtic winning, and I can still see Pierre van Hooijdonk’s powerful header from Tosh McKinlay’s brilliant cross if I close my eyes.

Even though it was near the conclusion of McStay’s career, I had a feeling of what an exceptional player and captain he was. He is also one of my all-time Celtic heroes.

Although we all cherish and enjoy Celtic in its current iteration, there’s something special about recalling the days of first falling in love with the club, even if there weren’t as many trophies back then as there are now.
