The manager at Portman Road has had a fantastic start to life as a No. 1 after previously working as an assistant to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United. He apparently failed to persuade some of the players at Old Trafford and decided to go it alone, and he has led the Tractor Boys impressively in recent seasons.

Last season, he guided East Anglia to automatic promotion from League One, and they were instantly anticipated to make an impression in the second tier. They have followed that up by winning nine of their eleven games to sit second in the Championship after a record-breaking start.

The Ipswich management is aware of the adoring eyes coming McKenna’s way and wanted to protect them should a big fish come knocking. According to the Sun, they have included a £4 million escape option in case their manager is poached.

The 37-year-old is one of numerous young managers building a name for themselves across the Football League, but leaving Portman Road could be difficult. McKenna is thought to earn £25,000 per week plus extras, with his team well placed to compete.

Ipswich’s manager earlier revealed his plans to the Telegraph, saying, “The club’s ambition is to get back to the Premier League as well, so let’s hope that those two paths will cross at the same time.”

“However, I don’t plan too far ahead.” As manager, it is my job to devote all of my time and efforts to assisting the club. From then, the football will take care of itself and take you anywhere it wants to go.

Leeds are now the only team to have defeated Ipswich, winning 4-3 in August. McKenna’s side defeated high-flying Preston in a six-goal thriller on Saturday, earning praise for their attractive brand of play.

“It was a great result to finish off the block of games, with some great goals and some great entertainment,” he said on the club’s website. There were certain parts I didn’t like, but we worked it out. We scored some fantastic goals and didn’t give up many chances, so I believed we were deserving winners.”

When McKenna was at Old Trafford, some argued that Solskjaer’s assistants, which included now Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick, lacked expertise, but both have proven they have bright futures since leaving Manchester.
