Ryan Day pinpoints when Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Kyle McCord is at his best.Kyle McCord gets the nod as starting QB for No. 3 Ohio State

Coach Ryan Day of the Ohio State Buckeyes revealed what Kyle McCord requires to be at his best in the offence.

Last week, the Ohio State Buckeyes offence struggled in the first half against Rutgers before exploding for 28 points in the final two quarters.

And, while quarterback Kyle McCord has been reliable for the Buckeyes in recent weeks, he has had one major issue in his last two games: turnovers.

McCord has three interceptions in the last two games after having only one through the first seven games of the season.

Head coach Ryan Day, on the other hand, believes that when McCord is in the right rhythm, he will be at his best and take care of the football.

“The only thing I can recognise is when his feet are right and his eyes are right, that’s when he’s at his best,” Day said Tuesday during his weekly press conference.

Day went on to say that he tries to put McCord in the best situations possible for success, but there are times when McCord is forced to improvise, which has been a challenge.

“You try to find things that he’s comfortable with but sometimes you can’t always predict it the right way,” Day went on to say.

The Buckeyes’ coach went on to discuss how having two solid, healthy running backs in junior TreVeyon Henderson and senior Chip Trayanum can help both McCord and the passing game.

“It provides you with two ball carriers.” And when that happens, they have to defend you in a different way,” Day explained.

has posed a challenge for defences, particularly in the last two games against Wisconsin and Rutgers, where the passing game struggled. Henderson has 415 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns in that span.

Day believes the Buckeyes’ schemes confuse opposing teams because they can’t focus on “one personnel group or one scheme.”

“The spacings are different, the schemes are different, the angles are different,” Day went on to say. “And sometimes when you can change that up, it opens up things in other areas.”

Day, Henderson, and the Buckeyes return to Columbus on Saturday to face Michigan State at 7:30 p.m., which will be broadcast on NBC Sports.
