Without Jim Harbaugh, Michigan did not appear to be prepared to defeat Ohio State in the first game.Without Jim Harbaugh, No. 2 Michigan grinds past No. 9 Penn State with 32 straight runs in 24-15 win – WKRG News 5

The deeper this season progresses, the more questions it raises.

Michigan is embroiled in a sign-stealing scandal that resulted in a three-game suspension for coach Jim Harbaugh — his second such punishment this season.

Was sign-stealing really that advantageous? Was Michigan hampered by the absence of Harbaugh on Saturday? Is this team not as good as some believe?

The Wolverines’ first legitimate test following a season-long cupcake parade yielded few answers. It was a good win, but it wasn’t spectacular.

Prior to the game, it was widely assumed that Michigan was the premier team in the Big Ten, on a par with Ohio State. It didn’t appear to be the case against Penn.

The Buckeyes may be superior. They’ve certainly played a tougher schedule, highlighted by a win at Notre Dame, and they’ll have Heisman Trophy contender Marvin Harrison Jr. on the field in Ann Arbour on Nov. 25.

Of course, you have to give Michigan credit for finding a way to win in a hostile environment on the road without its leader, who was suspended on Friday for violating the league’s sportsmanship policy after an investigation into the alleged sign-stealing operation. For prevailing despite everything swirling around the program.

Then again, I expected more defiance in terms of it translating into dominance. The team wore “Michigan vs. Everybody” shirts and winter hats to the game. After the victory, an emotional offensive coordinator and line coach, Sherrone Moore — Harbaugh’s replacement — went off on a profanity-laced tirade.

“Coach Harbaugh, I f—ing love you, man,” Moore said while fighting back tears. “I love the s— out of you, man! I did this for you…For this university, the president, our AD. We got the best players, best university, best alumni in the country. Love you guys.”

However, the actual play on the field left much to be desired. Michigan chose to run the ball on 32 consecutive plays at one point, despite only passing eight times. That was enough to defeat Penn State and coach James Franklin, who is now 3-17 against top-10 teams as the Nittany Lions’ coach. That same conservative mindset will not work against Ohio State. If Michigan’s request for a temporary restraining order against the Big Ten and Commissioner Tony Petitti is granted, Harbaugh may return for that game. A hearing is set for Friday.
