Jordan Love’s 2023 season is officially better than any season by a Bears QB…ever

Jordan Love's 2023 season is officially better than any season by a Bears QB ...ever | Marca

Love is on the precipice of guiding the Packers to the playoffs

It hasn’t been the easiest season for Jordan Love and the Packers, but thanks to a recent hot streak, Green Bay is well-positioned to return the NFL playoffs less than a year after trading the legendary Aaron Rodgers.

Love on Sunday became one of three quarterbacks to have tossed at least 30 touchdown passes in 2023 as he guided the Packers to a 33-10 win over the Minnesota Vikings — a victory that brought Green Bay’s record to 8-7 and set up a “win and in” scenario for Week 18. Love’s performances over the past seven weeks — a stretch that has seen Green Bay go 5-2 — allowed him to pile up statistics that exceeded the best season of any quarterback in the history of the rival Chicago Bears

Love’s 3,843 passing yards in 2023 are five more than Erik Kramer, who holds Chicago’s all-time record for passing yards in a single season — a mark set back in 1995. Love’s 30 touchdowns this season — his first as Green Bay’s starter — also exceed Kramer’s 29 TD passes from 1995, more than any other Bears quarterback.

Love will match up against Justin Fields and the Bears in the regular season finale next Sunday — and if the Packers complete the season sweep over their longtime rivals, Green Bay will secure one of the remaining wild card spots and will likely visit the Dallas Cowboys on wild card weekend. It would give Chicago a road map for the future with Fields under center — and its potential pathway to improve dramatically in 2024 comes through the draft in April.

Chicago has held out hope that Fields will set new franchise benchmarks for quarterback success, and 2023 has been a step forward in that regard. The Bears are only 7-9 and out of playoff contention, but they have been one of the hottest teams in football since November — they have won five of their past seven games and are likely to keep head coach Matt Eberflus for next season.

The core around Fields — who has accounted for 3,044 yards and 20 touchdowns this season — could be bolstered if Chicago deals the #1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft to move down and select another wide receiver to complement #1 wideout D.J. Moore. General manager Ryan Poles, who acquired this pick from the Carolina Panthers last year, could also package it in a deal to acquire further selections or more players to build depth as 2024 takes on huge importance for the long-suffering franchise.
