Not every recruit has the backstory that 2024 Miami signee Cole McConathy does. The one-time quarterback is now a defensive end who’s ready to play for the Hurricanes.

Even after leading the state of Alabama in sacks with 24.5, he’s still as humble as ever and can’t wait to get to the University of Miami on Jan. 14. To begin, here’s why McConathy went with Miami in the first place.

“I would have to say that it was the combination of picking a school and a coach,” McConathy began. “The ability to play there and have an elite coaching staff, have a chance to get an elite education, and play for a national championship as well.”

Coming from Spanish Fort (Ala.) High School, McConathy is not concerned about what jersey number he ends up receiving but is looking forward to getting to Miami overall.

“Get to know the team, really. Getting acclimated to the team and the schedule.”

At 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds, McConathy does not have any statistical goals for his freshman season, but he does want to learn as much as possible during spring ball to be ready to help the Canes win in 2024. There’s a specific trait he believes Miami fans will see from him right away.

“One of the biggest strengths of my game would be my get-off. Being able to bend and rush the passer.”

Looking to McConathy’s arrival in Coral Gables, the UM coaching staff is providing details about the workouts and how what they entail.

“They have talked about the day-to-day schedule, and how I can fit in. Kind of how I can adapt to their everyday schedule.”
