How Will Reese Poffenbarger Impact Miami’s Quarterback Room? | Donno Podcast

Will Poffenbarger push Jacurri Brown and Emory Williams for the starting job in 2024?

I don’t want anyone to overreact or under-react to Miami adding FCS standout quarterback Reese Poffenbarger.

Is he Cam Ward? No

But I also do not believe he’s just some JAG brought in to sit on the end of the bench.

Poffenbarger was brought in to compete and develop. With the Albany Great Danes last season, he threw for an FCS high 3,614 yards and 36 touchdowns. He added five rushing TD’s.

On tape he shows a strong arm, an accurate deep ball, athleticism and escapability.

I broke down Poffenbarger on my Locked On Canes podcast shortly after he committed to Miami.

Here are some important things to note:

-Miami will not hand Poffenbarger the starting job. He will compete with Jacurri Brown and Emory Williams. The returning QB’s were kept aware of Miami’s moves and understand the situation.

-Poffenbarger told CaneSport that he also received interest from Georgia, Florida, Washington State, UNLV and Houston. He said he was impressed with Mario Cristobal, Shannon Dawson, and their vision for Miami’s program.

-Miami needed another scholarship QB. Heading into spring football with just three scholarship quarterbacks including incoming freshman Judd Anderson just isn’t enough. Plus, we cannot say with complete certainty that Emory Williams will be fully recovered from his broken non-throwing arm when spring practices begin.

-Despite assumptions that Poffenbarger is the last player Miami will add to their quarterback room, I believe they are still keeping a spot open for Maryland’s Taulia Tagovailoa if the NCAA grants him an extra year. Since there is no timeline on the NCAA’s decision, Miami could not afford to wait for Tagovailoa before adding an insurance policy.
