Former Heat guard Kyle Lowry gets buyout from Hornets, signing with 76ers

MIAMI — Three weeks after being dealt by the Miami Heat, Kyle Lowry reached a buyout agreement from the Charlotte Hornets with plans to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Lowry’s agent posted a video on social media Saturday confirming the veteran point guard’s move to his hometown team. The Philadelphia native also played collegiately there at Villanova.

The Heat dealt Lowry and a first-round pick to the Hornets on Jan. 23 in exchange for guard Terry Rozier. Lowry, 37, remained in South Florida as a buyout then was worked out with Hornets, who are emphasizing a rebuild and youth movement. Since the Lowry deal, the Hornets also have traded Gordon Hayward to the Oklahoma City Thunder and P.J. Washington to the Dallas Mavericks.

Lowry joined the Heat in a sign-and-trade deal from the Toronto Raptors in the 2021 offseason, agreeing to a three-year, $85 million free-agent contract. He then helped the Heat to the 2022 Eastern Conference finals and the 2023 NBA Finals.

Uneven play this season led to Lowry’s move to a reserve role shortly before his trade to the Hornets.

Due $29.7 million this season on the final year of his contract, Lowry worked out a buyout with the Hornets to then accept a $2.8 million contract with the 76ers, his agent told ESPN.

Because of the buyout, Lowry, a six-time All-Star, forfeited his Bird Rights, to become a free agent in the offseason.

Beyond the hometown link to Philadelphia, Lowry also has strong ties to the staff of the 76ers, having won the 2019 NBA championship with the Raptors under current 76ers coach Nick Nurse and having played for the Houston Rockets when their front office was led by current 76ers General Manager Daryl Morey.

The Heat have two games remaining against the 76ers, on Wednesday night in Philadelphia and then on April 4 at Kaseya Center. The Heat defeated the 76ers on Christmas Day at Kaseya Center when Philadelphia was without again-sidelined center Joel Embiid.

Lowry averaged 8.2 points, four assists and 3.5 rebounds in starting 35 of his 37 appearances with the Heat this season.

The 76ers foreshadowed the move to Lowry when they dealt former Heat draft acquisition Patrick Beverley to the Milwaukee Bucks at Thursday’s NBA trading deadline. The Heat play the Bucks on Tuesday night at the start of their two-game trip that leads into an eight-day layoff for the All-Star break.
