Denzel Mims and Obinna Eze have been added to the Steelers’ practice squad.

On Tuesday, the Steelers announced a slew of roster changes, including the addition of wide receiver Denzel Mims and offensive lineman Obinna Eze to their practice squad, as well as the release of running back Greg Bell and wide receivers Jalen Camp and Jacob Campbell.

According to NFL source Aaron Wilson, the team also checked out four more players in addition to Mims and Eze. Tight ends Joel Honigford and Eric Saubert, as well as offensive lineman Alex Pihlstrom and Lecitus Smith, are among those named.

When he joined the 2020 NFL Draft, Mims was a popular name among Steeler fans. At the NFL combine, the 6’3″, 207-pound receiver ran a 4.38-second 40-yard dash. Mims has 66 catches for 1,020 yards and 12 touchdowns in his final season at Baylor.

The New York Jets selected Mims with the 59th overall pick, just ten picks after the Steelers selected Chase Claypool out of Notre Dame. Mims has 23 receptions for 357 yards and no touchdowns as a rookie. He has yet to have a better season, failing to surpass 200 yards receiving in both 2021 and 2022. He was dealt to the Detroit Lions in July for a conditional 2025 seventh-round pick, but the team waived/injured him a month later.

Eze was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Lions in 2022. To finish his college career, the 6’6″ 320-pound lineman started 12 games at left tackle for TCU. He spent the majority of his rookie year on Detroit’s practice squad before being released in August 2023.

Greg Bell, Jalen Camp, and Jacob Campbell were dismissed from the Steelers’ practice squad today, making room for Mims and Eze to join the team. One position is still open, and it might be filled by wide receiver Dez Fitzpatrick, who was cut off the Steelers’ 53-man roster on Monday.

Following a Week 4 loss, the Steelers waived WR
In terms of tryouts, it is doubtful that either Pihlstrom or Smith will be signed, given the Steelers have already added an offensive lineman to their practice squad in the form of Eze. Tight ends Honigford and Saubert may still be considered, since the Steelers have an open space on their 53-man roster and a need at the position, with starting tight end Pat Freiermuth out for several weeks due to injury.

On Sunday, the Steelers will meet the Baltimore Ravens at 1 p.m. ET.
