Texas Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian gave an update on the status of his starting quarterback Quinn Ewers on Monday

AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Longhorns fans were ecstatic on Thursday when head coach Steve Sarkisian announced the return of quarterback Quinn Ewers ahead of the Longhorns’ game against the TCU Horned Frogs in Fort Worth.

“Quinn’s going to start on Saturday night,” Sarkisian said. “Not at all limited. He looked fantastic this week.”

Ewers has missed the Longhorns’ last two games due to a shoulder injury on his throwing arm, which was initially diagnosed as a grade two AC sprain – an injury that typically takes six to eight weeks to heal.

Ewers, on the other hand, appears to have made a remarkable recovery and will now play for the Horns after missing only two weeks.

“When he came back to practise this week he didn’t show a lot of rust – physically or mentally,” Mr. Sarkisian said. “There wasn’t a throw he couldn’t make.”

The injury occurred during the third quarter of the Longhorns’ 31-24 win over the Houston Cougars on October 21, and despite his best efforts to play through the pain, Ewers was eventually replaced by Maalik Murphy.

Murphy has started the last two games for Texas in Ewers’ absence and has been inconsistent.

Murphy showed flashes of brilliance in his first start against BYU on October 28, completing 16 of 25 passes for 170 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.

After a fast start against Kansas State, it appeared that the rest of the game would be much the same. Murphy, on the other hand, struggled against the Wildcats, completing 19 of 37 passes for 248 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions.

Nonetheless, Murphy led the Longhorns to a 2-0 record in Ewers’ absence, which is all that can be expected of the redshirt freshman.

With Ewers back in the fold, and assuming he stays healthy, the Longhorns’ Big 12 title and College Football Playoff chances will improve significantly.

“I know he’s put in a lot of work to get back,” Sarkisian said. “I know his teammates are excited to have him back.”
