Report: Miami football QB Jacurri Brown returning in 2024

Miami’s starting quarterback from the Pinstripe Bowl will be staying with the Hurricanes for the 2024 season.

With the midnight Tuesday deadline to enter the Transfer Portal approaching, David Lake from Inside The U reported that JacurriBrown will be sticking with the Hurricanes.

“Brown is embracing the competition for playing time in 2024 with the understanding that if he continues to develop he has a chance to compete for the starting job in 2025,” Lake wrote.

Based on Lake’s breakdown, it sounds like Brown understands that Miami is still working towards adding a one-year starter from the transfer portal for the 2024 season. The Hurricanes were trying to land Washington State transfer Cam Ward, but he opted on New Year’s Day to enter the NFL Draft.

Brown will be a redshirt sophomore next season.

In Miami’s 31-24 loss to Rutgers in the Pinstripe Bowl, Brown completed 21 of 30 attempts (64.5%) for 181 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He also rushed for 57 yards and two rushing touchdowns.

Brown and Emory Williams are Miami’s only two returning quarterbacks for the 2024 season. The Hurricanes will be adding true freshman Judd Anderson as an early enrollee this month.

Looks like Miami is losing cornerback Davonte Brown to the Transfer Portal. Not to be confused, his younger brother Damari Brown is still with the Hurricanes.

Davonte Brown was with UCF for three seasons prior to transferring to Miami for the 2023 football campaign. Brown’s 2023 statistics include 10 tackles, a pass breakup, and a quarterback hurry.

Beyond the National Signing Day exploits of Mario Cristobaland the Miami Hurricanes, a talented defensive tackle by way of Middle Tennessee State University made his pick for the Miami Hurricanes.

Defensive tackle is a prime need for Miami, and Marley Cook is bringing his 6-foot-2 and 291-pound frame to Coral Gables:

According to Pro Football Focus, Cook’s 2023 statistics include playing 622 snaps. That’s a high number, to say the least. Then again, as the old saying goes, “A football player’s best ability is his availability.”

From his time along the defensive line, 460 of those snaps saw him playing the B gap, which constitutes him likely playing 3-technique for the Hurricanes. His statistics show promise as well.

Cook’s 15 stops, i.e. “Tackles that constitute a failure for the offense,” are a good sign among his 22 tackles. He also came up with 15 quarterback hurries and one sack.

The Miami Hurricanes are adding another talented offensive lineman to the mix, this time from the Big 10. Indiana center Zach Carpenteris now a Hurricane!

The Miami Hurricanes possess a deep running back room, and perhaps that’s part of the reason why Don Chaney, Jr. is now transferring to the Louisville Cardinals.

In four seasons with the Hurricanes, Chaney has 175 carries, 852 yards, a 4.9 average, and 6 touchdowns. Good luck to Chaney as he continues his career with the Cardinals.

Saturday is a good day for the Canes. The most recent Transfer Portal addition would now former Vanderbilt safety Savion Riley. Canes fans can read about him here:

Riley is the second player to pledge to Mario Cristobaland the Hurricanes after entering the Transfer Portal. The other addition would be CJ Clark, a former North Carolina State defensive tackle.

According to the following update, former Miami defensive end Jahfari Harvey will be going from the Canes to SMU. The head coach for the Mustangs would be former Miami offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee.

Harvey is the second Miami player to enter the Transfer Portal and pick a school after quarterback Tyler Van Dyke went with Wisconsin.

Here’s the list of players that have left Miami, as well as joined the Canes, via the Transfer Portal, with North Carolina State’s CJ Clark now joining the Hurricanes:

Additionally, this is a huge weekend for Miami and numerous other schools. Look for several players to make their transfer announcement in the next two to three days. A few players to think about with regards to Miami would be the following.

Now former Southern California wide receiver Mario Williams. He just entered the Portal and is from Plant City (Fla.) High School.

He originally took his talents to Oklahoma before going with Caleb Williams to USC. While not the biggest guy, Williams is really fast and can make plays. Williams has 29 receptions, 305 yards, a 10.5 average, and 2 touchdowns for the 2023 season.

Do not be surprised if Miami at least considers being involved especially with Colbie Young in the Transfer Portal.

While many might not know about Middle Tennessee State defensive tackle Marley Cook, he’s a player that the Canes coaching staff targeted early during this Transfer Portal cycle. That says a lot. In 2023, Cook came away with 22 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, and a sack. He’s listed at 6-foot-2 and 298 pounds, so Cook fits the profile of a true interior defensive lineman.

As for a potential long-term game-changer, it’s possibly a player from Vanderbilt. Only a true freshman this season, Savion Riley has 34 solo and 14 assisted tackles. 48 total tackles, as a first-year player in the SEC, is impressive. The 6-foot-2 and 202-pound defender is at UM this weekend along with Cook.

There are other Transfer Portal players to track and will be discussing more players in detail as news becomes available.

Miami is losing second-year edge rusher Cyrus Moss. He’s a former 4-Star recruit (class of 2022) out of the powerhouse program Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas. One of the reasons Moss was yet to gain traction at Miami is his narrow frame at 6-5, 215 lbs. His potential remains high and he has three years of eligibility remaining.

Miami is about where one would expect with the Transfer Portal. The UM coaching staff is going after the best players and that takes time to gain results, and there are some Hurricanes that have already pledged to leave Coral Gables.

Today is the beginning of the exodus, or at least it seems that way. There’s the news that defensive end Jahfari Harvey will find a new home for a sixth-year of eligibility. He’s been a good player for the Canes.

Of course, there’s the news that just broke about quarterback Tyler Van Dyke hitting the Transfer Portal. That’s huge news, but not exactly unexpected. Here’s the article that recently came out:

Additionally, Miami is losing running back Don Chaney, Jr., and linebacker Corey Flagg, Jr. to the Transfer Portal.

Chaney, whose career was riddled with odd injuries preventing him from seeing the field, was a highly touted tailback from Belen Jesuit Prep. Chaney was the gem of Miami’s 2020 recruiting class and he was joined by Jaylan Knighton, who transferred to SMU.

Chaney stuck it out through his injuries and burst back into the spotlight this season with 478 yards and two touchdowns while averaging 5.1 yards per carry. Chaney had 852 yards and six touchdowns in his Miami Career.

Flagg had a highly productive career at Miami. While not the most flashy linebacker with a 5’11, 230-pound frame, Flagg was a constant contributor on the Hurricanes’ defense. Flagg played four seasons at Miami, seeing the majority of his playing time in 2021 and 2022. Flagg played largely in a rotational role this year.

Flagg had 48 tackles and seven tackles for loss for the 2023 season. During his career, he had 179 tackles with 24.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks with the Canes.

To reiterate, all four of these transfers are from today. It’s been crazy and Miami fans should expect to see even more news fairly soon.

Keep in mind, there will be players heading into The U, and soon, once the Transfer Portal officially opens on Dec. 4. It closes on Jan. 2, for the record.
