National Signing Day 2024 Tracker: Ryan Williams signs with Alabama; Terry Bussey to A&M

College football’s National Signing Day might have lost quite a bit of luster due to the December early signing period that has been instituted in recent years. But there are still some blue-chip recruits who have yet to put pen to paper and are finally expected to do so on Wednesday.

To open up the day, Terry Bussey, the nation’s top pure football athlete, reaffirmed his commitment to Texas A&M. Bussey is the crown jewel of Mike Elko’s first recruiting class as Aggies head coach.

Ryan Williams, a five-star wide receiver who was the subject of the first big Kalen DeBoer-Hugh Freeze, Alabama-Auburn recruiting battle, stayed true to his commitment and signed with the Crimson Tide.

Williams, a five-star wide receiver out of Saraland, Alabama, considered one of the top overall recruits in the country, officially signed with Alabama on Wednesday. His signature capped a whirlwind month when Williams went from another five-star feather in Nick Saban’s cap to Kalen DeBoer’s first major recruiting win with the Crimson Tide.

Williams, originally a top Class of 2025 prospect before reclassifying in December, had been committed to Alabama since October 2022, but when Saban announced his retirement on Jan. 10, Williams became the first major recruit to decommit, re-opening his recruitment that very same day.

Despite taking official visits to Texas A&M and LSU and entertaining a strong late push from Hugh Freeze and in-state Auburn, Williams re-committed to Alabama on Jan. 24 after DeBoer and his staff re-recruited him, a pivotal early victory in the new coach’s tenure. It also helped DeBoer that Williams then publicly gushed about the new Alabama coach, saying there was no one else he would play for other than DeBoer and Saban.

As a prospect, Williams’ explosiveness and sheer playmaking ability have earned him comparisons to another Alabama wide receiver — 2020 Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith. Williams further endeared himself to Alabama fans Wednesday by bringing out viral sensation “Roll Tide Willie” at his signing ceremony.

Bethel-Roman initially fended off a late Texas A&M push under new head coach Mike Elko, honoring his previous commitment to Arkansas by signing with the Razorbacks on Dec. 20 during the early signing period. But he later asked for a release from his NLI to Arkansas and was granted it on Feb. 1, opening the door for Elko and the Aggies to again pursue the agile, versatile four-star receiver. This time, Texas A&M closed the deal.

Jim Harbaugh’s Michigan and Dan Lanning’s Oregon battled it out for the speedy Idaho wide receiver, but Lanning and the Ducks prevailed in early February, shortly after Harbaugh left for the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers. Bair, one of the fastest players in the class of 2024, joins a loaded room (especially at wide receiver) that is consensus top five in the nation in Eugene.

Oregon will wait a while to get Bair on campus, however, as he will not arrive until 2026 due to a two-year mission with his church as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
