Drake Maye of UNC is shown interest by the New England Patriots during Pro Day.

Following North Carolina’s Pro Day on Thursday, Drake Maye appears to be the quarterback the New England Patriots are searching for to become their next franchise quarterback.

The Pats now have the third choice in the NFL Draft, which could potentially result in the 6-foot-4, 230-pound quarterback being selected in the first round. Maye is expected to be selected in the first round next month.

Every UNC player who was eligible for the draft was present at the pro day, and Bleacher Report claims that Maye dazzled scouts with his performance. The 21-year-old demonstrated his accuracy and arm strength with a string of downfield passes, including one that went 65 yards.

Head coach Jerod Mayo, director of scouting Eliot Wolf, personnel executive Alonzo Highsmith, director of player personnel Matt Groh, offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, senior offensive assistant Ben McAdoo, and quarterback coach T.C. McCartney are among the members of New England’s “A-Team” that were reportedly sent to Chapel Hill on Thursday to assess Maye.

The redshirt sophomore told the media that he felt fantastic about the encounter after speaking with Mayo and Van Pelt before working out.

“It’s been amazing—especially for such a famous squad and program in New England history. It’s been great to have the opportunity to get to know them, understand their principles, and experience a return to their heyday.”

Not just the Patriots are trying to select a rookie quarterback in this year’s draft. The Washington Commanders will select second overall, with Caleb Williams of USC predicted to be selected by the Chicago Bears with the first overall pick.

After meeting with recently recruited head coach Dan Quinn, Maye was likewise happy with his interactions.

“I’m eager to find out what lies ahead. They seem to be doing something really fantastic up there. The Commanders are another great baseball team that are located fairly close to home.”

Apart from traveling to Chapel Hill, the New England staff also went to the pro days for Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy and LSU’s Jayden Daniels.

Maye had 3,608 throwing yards, 449 rushing yards, nine rushing touchdowns, nine interceptions, and 24 passing yards at the end of the season. Maye was a member of the Tar Heels for 26 games in all. He concluded his career with 7,929 yards, 62 touchdowns, 16 interceptions, and a 64.9 completion %.
