Virginia Tech football: Penn State reverses 2025 WR commitment Matthew Outten
The Hokies lost a significant component of their 2025 recruiting class.

It’s been a difficult 48 hours for the Virginia Tech football team and head coach Brent Pry. The Hokies suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss to the Vanderbilt Commodores on Saturday. The outcome was disheartening, especially given the anticipation and enthusiasm surrounding the Hokies over the winter.

On Monday, Pry and the Hokies received another terrible news. Four-star wide receiver Matthew Outten, who had committed to Virginia Tech earlier this summer, reversed his decision to Penn State. The Norcom High School (Portsmouth, Va.) graduate was one of three four-star wide receivers that committed to Tech for the 2025 recruiting class.

Fans may believe that losing to Vandy while Penn State crushed West Virginia influenced Outten’s decision to join the Nittany Lions, but PSU never stopped working on him. James Franklin, Pry’s previous supervisor, had been working on Outten since June and was finally successful.

I suppose Outten wasn’t “100% committed” after all, as he stated on X following his pledge to the Hokies.

You can’t blame Outten for preferring Penn State to Virginia Tech right now. The schools are currently at different locations. The results from last weekend are unlikely to have influenced his decision.

It’s a poor look for the Hokies that another great recruit from Virginia has decided to depart the state.

Outten is a great potential. If there is one bright spot in Outten’s departure, it is that the Hokies still have two four-star recruits (Micah Matthews and Snoop Peterkin) committed. Don’t forget that the Hokies presently have two outstanding freshman receivers, Brodie Adams and Chanz Wiggins. It still stings, however.

The Hokies want to get back on track when they host Marshall this weekend.
