Claudio Bravo has applauded Joel Robles on Instagram after the goalkeeper’s display for Leeds United in their draw with Newcastle at Elland Road on Saturday.

The Whites were not able to pick up a much-needed win in their battle to beat the drop. However, Sam Allardyce’s men built on their encouraging effort against Manchester City to earn a point against the high-flying Magpies.

Leeds were never going to be perfect. And there were indeed a number of mistakes made. Neither Max Wober or Junior Firpo will enjoy watching back the penalties they gave away in the 2-2 draw.

But Leeds showed the kind of fight that was often missing when setbacks emerged in recent months. And a number of players have shown the fans that survival could yet be possible.

Certainly, one of those who has impressed in the last two games has been Joel Robles. The 32-year-old came in for Illan Meslier before the trip to the Etihad Stadium.

And he has vindicated that decision. Joel has probably not done anything particularly spectacular. And he has conceded four goals across those two games. But he has looked a much safer pair of hands than Meslier.

The Spaniard has made a number of smart stops. He has kept things simple with his distribution. And he has been commanding when the ball has gone into dangerous areas in his penalty area.

It is hard to see Meslier playing for Leeds again this season. And Joel is arguably showing why Leeds would be wise to ensure that he stays beyond this term.

The summer signing has since taken to Instagram to mark Saturday’s draw. And amongst those to reply was Claudio Bravo, who played alongside Joel at Real Betis.
