‘Potentially’: Peter Crouch could see £100m player joining Newcastle this summer

Peter Crouch explains why Harry Kane shouldn’t join Newcastle this summer.

Harry Kane could leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer, but Peter Crouch does not think he should be signing for Newcastle United.

The Tottenham striker has gone another season without winning a trophy, despite Kane enjoying one of his best ever Premier League campaigns on a personal level.

The England captain has scored 28 times in the league, which would win him the Golden Boot on most occasions. However, he has been denied by Manchester City superstar Erling Haaland.

While Kane continues to do his bit and edge closer to the all-time Premier League goalscoring record, his trophy cabinet remains bare. That is why talk of a £100million exit continues, having been heavily rumoured with a move to Manchester City two years ago.

Now it appears that Manchester United are the favourites, while some pundits have talked up a potential move to Newcastle – simply because of the Magpies’ surge up the table and newfound wealth.

However, former Spurs striker Crouch has explained why he does not foresee Kane swapping North London for the North East.

Newcastle a ‘sideways move’ for Harry Kane

Crouch spoke about Kane’s future on BT Sport on Saturday after Spurs’ 3-1 defeat to Brentford.

“He might have ambitions to go somewhere else and potentially win a trophy but it’s not just down to him, he still has a year left,” Crouch said.

“There’s a man at the club that doesn’t want to lose his star player and what would it mean to these fans to lose a player of Kane’s calibre? Where can he go? Manchester City City is sewn up now. Manchester United is the only real option I can see. You can’t go to Chelsea. You can’t go to Arsenal.

“Newcastle is potentially an option but I still feel that’s a sideways move. Newcastle have got great potential but I feel like he might as well stay at Tottenham.”

No chance of a move to St James’ Park for Kane

Would swapping Tottenham for Newcastle be a sideways move for Kane? Well, one team is on the up and closing in on Champions League football, while the other might not be in Europe full stop.

But the one thing Kane needs is trophies, and they would not be guaranteed at Newcastle. Obviously that is the aim in the coming years, but achieving silverware is going to be very difficult.

Realistically, the only Premier League club Kane could join that would almost guarantee him trophies is Man City, and there is no way he is going there. They have got no need for him – they already have the top flight’s best striker in Haaland.

While Crouch might think a move to Newcastle would be a sideways one, there is no reason why the Magpies would even be interested. Obviously he is a world class player, but he is someone who would cost the Toon owners an absolute fortune. The money could be put to better use, as Eddie Howe already has two excellent strikers in Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson.

Kane might not fancy Newcastle, and that’s alright, because Newcastle might not fancy him either.
