Erik ten Hag has refused to confirm reports that Wout Weghorst will be leaving Man Utd after his loan spell from Burnley.
Ten Hag brought his compatriot to Man Utd during the January transfer window, interrupting his loan spell at Besiktas. It was important for the club to find a new striker at the time because of Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure and subsequent move to Al Nassr.
After previously struggling to make an impact in six months with Burnley, Weghorst was a left-field choice for Man Utd in their striker search.
But Ten Hag has shown plenty of faith in the former Wolfsburg star, despite him going on to fail to score in 17 Premier League appearances.
Nevertheless, a report from the Daily Mail this week confirmed that Man Utd would not be keeping Weghorst after his loan spell, while the same would go for Marcel Sabitzer after the midfielder’s temporary switch from Bayern Munich.
But when asked at his Friday press conference in preview of Saturday’s FA Cup final about Weghorst’s future, Ten Hag refused to clarify if it was going to be Weghorst’s last game for Man Utd.
The manager replied: “I don’t know. You can’t say that in this moment.
“I’m not in this moment into transfer politics. I’m in to win this game and we will do everything.
“And I think Wout played very good for us, very good contribution to the team result. I think he did what we took him for.”
Weghorst has a decent chance of featuring against Man City in the FA Cup final because Anthony Martial is ruled out through injury. That said, Marcus Rashford is the more likely starter at centre-forward.
Weghorst proud of his Man Utd spell
If this is indeed the end of Weghorst’s time at Man Utd, he has been reflecting on his 30-game, two-goal spell with the club.
He told Man Utd’s in-house media team: “[I’m] proud, first of all. I’m still really, really proud and thankful that I’m playing for this amazing club, big club, the most beautiful club in England.
Weghorst remains under contract back at Burnley until 2025, but is unlikely to have a future there either, despite them winning promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt.
