Szoboszlai deadline?

As it stands, the Magpies are not prepared to budge on their valuations for targets such as James Maddison and Dominik Szoboszlai. The former is entering the final year of his contract, but Leicester City are currently unwilling to lower their demands despite their relegation and the risk of losing the England international on a free transfer next year.

Szoboszlai is another contender to add creativity to Eddie Howe’s squad next season, but the RB Leipzig star also will not come cheaply. The 22-year-old’s release clause would cost the Magpies in the region of £60 million, with no indications so far that the Bundesliga side would be willing to negotiate a lower fee.

Now, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has cast light on the clause itself which may put a deadline on Newcastle’s pursuit of the Hungary international in this window. Romano took to social media to explain the release clause will only be activated if a club submits an offer by June 30.

Given Newcastle’s current stance on this valuation, this date might well bear no influence on their interest in Szoboszlai. However, it could open the door for suitors elsewhere to make their move by the end of the month.

Griffiths bid?

Away from their obvious midfield priority, Newcastle are also facing up to a reshuffle in the goalkeeping department. Nick Pope is the undisputed number one following an impressive debut season, with doubts over Karl Darlow and Martin Dubravka’s future.

Loris Karius has been offered an extension to his short-term deal, while Mark Gillespie has seen his own contract extended. However, these moves have seemingly not dissuaded the Magpies from looking to bolster their options further.

The Sun claim Newcastle are preparing a ‘surprise bid’ for England under-21 international Josh Griffiths, who has so far made 10 senior appearances for West Brom. Sporting director Dan Ashworth is said to have retained an interest in the young goalkeeper since his spell working with the Baggies.

West Brom are again expected to be looking at free agents and the loan market after failing in their efforts to return to the Premier League. Griffiths has two years to run on his contract and is valued at £1.5 million, according to transfermarkt.
