It’s not in my nature. Vincent Kompany hits back at critics of Burnley’s Premier League style
Vincent Kompany insists he won’t be changing his principles despite Burnley’s poor start to life back in the Premier League.
Clarets have failed to win either of their first three games, allowing 11 goals in that time to drop to the bottom of the league. The team has been so easy to beat, as evidenced by their 5-2 drubbing at Tottenham on Saturday. Kompany has responded to calls to alter his side’s approach, saying it is not in his nature to be so reactive. “I can’t change who I am, it’s not in my character. We’ve been successful, so let’s not forget that,” he said. “As I said before, making changes is different. But when you look at successful and unsuccessful teams, it’s always the same story. Once something doesn’t work, you change it and then it doesn’t work again.”
“That’s the opposite of who I am,” Kompany added. With two weeks off, the Clarets have until the end of the month to make the necessary changes ahead of their trip to Nottingham Forest.
Kompany added: “I can only speak for myself, but during my career, it’s not just about the good times. Being a good leader in the good times is what I’m most confident in. It’s about keeping people calm, analysing what needs to be improved and deciding what you want to do next. My aim is to say, ‘okay, the next time we play Spurs or Man City, can we show that we’ve closed the gap or that we have a chance to win?’ That’s how I approach it.” Kompany added that it’s often the emotional side of things that
gets in the way, as people often panic, but that’s not in my nature. “You’ll do whatever it takes to avoid losing, but it’s the good times that teach you the most about your players, the people in the dressing room, and how your team responds and gets better.”
