Newcastle is ‘pushing’ to sign a player from Serie A, which is dominating in Europe, in order to address Eddie Howe’s one weakness.

Newcastle United are ‘pushing’ to complete the signing of a Serie A star who is one of the most deadly full-backs in Europe when it comes to goals and assists, according to reports.

Newcastle’s first-choice right-back is Kieran Trippier, who usually captains the team when skipper Jamaal Lascelles is on the bench. The Englishman has been a revelation since moving to St James’ Park, having registered one goal and nine assists in 42 matches this campaign.

Admittedly, Trippier is now 32 years of age, which means the Magpies need to find a successor on the right side of defence. They are firmly in the race to sign breakout La Liga talent Ivan Fresneda.

At left-back, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe mainly plays either Dan Burn or Matt Targett. Despite mainly being known as a centre-half, Burn has been played at left-back in each of Newcastle’s last 27 Premier League games.

The 31-year-old has proven himself to be a reliable top-flight performer, while he is also a fan favourite at Newcastle due to the fact he grew up supporting the club.

However, it is clear Burn lacks agility due to his height. Plus, he is not the best when it comes to getting forward and joining Newcastle attacks.

As Newcastle gets ready to compete in Europe’s premier club competition, the Champions League, left-back is probably going to be one of the areas they improve this summer.

Additionally, Howe will switch Burn out for Carlos Augusto, a player who is excelling in Serie A, according to Calciomercato.

Augusto is a 24-year-old Brazilian who previously represented his country at U20 level. He left South America in September 2020 to join Monza.

Augusto has really begun to blossom this campaign, having notched six goals and five assists in 31 league appearances.

The report explains how the Monza ace is one of the leading full-backs in Europe when it comes to goal contributions. And this has put Newcastle on alert, with the Tyneside club ‘pushing’ to sign him.

Monza will make a big profit if they sell Augusto to Newcastle. After originally buying him for just €4million, they have set his asking price at €20m (£17.3m). This is easily achievable for Newcastle given their massively wealthy owners.

It is claimed some of Monza’s Serie A rivals are keeping tabs on the situation. However, they look set to be blown away as it is Newcastle ‘in particular’ who are trying to complete a deal.

While a move to the Premier League would be a significant step up for the defender, he would be helped at Newcastle by the club’s contingent of Brazilian stars, Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes.

Augusto would be a left-field signing from Newcastle, given the fact they could pursue some of the best left-backs in Europe if they wished. Although, Howe has spoken about the club’s project and how they want up-and-coming players to join, rather than big-name stars with huge wage demands and expectations. Augusto fits into the first category perfectly.
